UWS Subway News: 2/3 Changes Causing Headaches, Protest at MTA CEO’s Apartment

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

subwayStraphangers relying on the 2 and 3 subway lines to take them where they need to go are going to continue to be frustrated for a few more weekends as the MTA plans to continue a massive service disruption.  Each weekend through September 13th, 2 lines are suspended between Manhattan and the Bronx and 3 lines are nonexistent while the MTA works on repairing a switch at the 142nd Street junction, north of the 135th Street station.  While other subway lines and shuttle buses replace service, this disruption is frustrating many New Yorkers who now must allot up to an extra hour each way for their weekend transportation, according to the New York Post.

In other Upper West Side subway news, the MTA is getting more bad press as the Transit Workers Union Local 100 is going after MTA CEO Jay Walder.  The union has asked Walder to cut his $350,000 salary to acknowledge the workers’ struggle after service cuts and layoffs.  Because Walder ignored the request, the union plans to stage a protest outside of his $1.6 million condo on Central Park West and 96th, according to New York Daily News.  The TWU also asked French members to protest outside of Walder’s country home in the south of France.  Stay tuned to see if the protests result in any policy changes at the MTA.
