This Week at the American Museum of Natural History

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

amnhIt’s another great week of events at the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th).  It all starts today with “The Message Behind the Music,” a free program that will explore the transformative power of song and the shifting cultural influences that drive musical styles.   Come as Broadway actor/singer James Stovall presents a tribute to Paul Robeson, local choirs perform spirituals and the music of the Civil Rights Movement, and Impact Repertory Theatre and spoken word artists will present contemporary expressions of social change, accompanied by jazz musician Joey Morant.   Wildlife fan?  Then try the “Winter Bird Walks” series, starting Tuesday.  Catch a peek at owls, songbirds, and woodpeckers in the woods, seed-eating birds in the fields, and many species of ducks and gulls in the lakes, all in our backyard, Central Park.  Also on Tuesday is this month’s Celestial Highlights, titled “Family Fun-damentals II.”  Using basic shapes like rectangles and circles, youngsters will gain a basic understanding of the constellations and learn to track them as they move across the night sky.  A special lecture takes place at the museum on Wednesday titled “The Looting of the Iraq Museum.”  Join SUNY professor Dr. Donny George Youkhanna as he shares his unique perspectives on the current archeological and museum conditions in Iraq.  Finally, consider a guided tour on Thursday that will explain how the national parks were established.  “The Museum, Theodore Roosevelt, and National Parks” explores the museum’s dioramas, which depict many beloved parks across America, and the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Halls, with geologist Sydney Horenstein.  Regardless of your interests, there’s something fun for you this week at AMNH!
