This Week at the American Museum of Natural History

Monday, January 4th, 2010

amnhThe American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th) is hosting many interesting events this week, so don’t let yourself get stir-crazy from the cold weather and head out to the museum for a fun day.  First, AMNH’s “Courses in the Sciences” starts today, giving high school students a chance to venture into vast regions of space, dive deep into the microscopic world of DNA, or track the evolution of dinosaurs.  The courses are one to two times per week through February 12th.  Next, come to tomorrow’s Virtual Universe, where you can take an interactive tour of the universe.  This month’s edition allows you to “experience 60 minutes of our recent YouTube sensation ‘The Known Universe’ with a live guided tour in the immersive Hayden Planetarium.”  Wednesday, the museum continues its SciCafe series, an informal evening with cocktails and socializing, emceed by experts on cutting-edge science topics.  This month’s SciCafe explores the mysteries of the Congo with ichthyologist and museum curator Melanie Stiassny.  On Thursday, the museum will hold a special members-only “Field Trip to the Moon.”  “Feel the ground shake as your rocket launches, see a sunrise in space, and orbit and land on the Moon.”  Finally, on Friday night the museum is transformed into a dance party with its monthly One Step Beyond party.  While this month’s party, featuring Animal Collective, is sold out, you could still try calling or emailing the organizer, as tickets can sometimes become available.  It’s a great week to enjoy the museum!
