This Week’s Wine Events on the UWS
Wine lover? There are plenty of events on the Upper West Side this week offering great wine. First, the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th) is putting on an interesting wine event on Wednesday as part of their “Global Kitchen” series. “Wines With Ancient Lineage” brings in expert Mollie Battenhouse, sommelier and wine director of Maslow 6, and grape geneticist Peter Cousins of Cornell University to discuss the early history of viticulture, tracing modern wines back to ancient times, offering a tasting as you learn. Looking for a wine event that includes some tasty food? Head to the Columbus Square Whole Foods Market (Columbus near 97th) this Thursday (or each Thursday through March 18th) for a wine tasting and amuse bouche pairing. A $10 donation gets you the glass to enjoy an assortment of local wines and local food pairings. Proceeds benefit the Whole Planet Foundation, which provides microcredit loans to people in impoverished areas. Another wine event this week takes place at Bacchus (Broadway between 70th and 71st). Come to the store on Thursday for “Ravishing Rhone,” a tasting of wines from the Rhone Valley. The $15 admission provides the delicious wines, tasting notes, and a Reidel crystal wine glass to take home. If you just want to sample some different wines, there are always free tastings throughout the Upper West Side, from Pour Wine‘s (Amsterdam at 75th) nightly tasting (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm M-F or 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm weekends) to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tastings at the Columbus Square Whole Foods to daily tastings at Best Cellars (Broadway between 80th and 81st, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm M-F or 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm weekends).
