A 33-year-old woman who threw her 19-month-old daughter into the Hudson River yesterday before jumping in herself in an apparent murder-suicide attempt was charged last night, according to Gothamist. Devi Silvia was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child while being taken to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens for a psychiatric evaluation last night. Silvia was seen in the water yesterday around 11:40 am after witnesses noticed an empty stroller at the Hudson River pier at 70th Street. She allegedly tossed her infant daughter, Jessica Catherine Prithiviraj, into the water and subsequently jumped herself after a fight with her husband at their Trump Place apartment on Riverside and 67th. Witnesses called 911, and rescuers pulled Silvia and Prithiviraj from the water and brought both to the hospital. Prithiviraj had been listed in critical condition, but began to recover and was reportedly walking around and playing with toys at the hospital as of last night. While Silvia’s husband, Amirtharig Prithiviraj, may have been on the scene (West Side Independent spoke to a witness who allegedly talked to a man claiming to be her husband), he denied marital issues and has not released a further statement. The full story can be found at Gothamist or the New York Post.
