Work on Bethesda Terrace’s Fountain Scheduled to Finish by End of May
Although most of Central Park is looking spectacular, green, and generally spring-like these days, an iconic and beautiful site in the park, Bethesda Terrace’s Angel of Waters fountain (mid-park, near 72nd) is not looking its best at the moment. The famous statue is currently surrounded by scaffolding as it undergoes conservation work. Central Park Conservancy’s website announced that the monument, allegedly Central Park’s most photographed, will be worked on over the next few weeks, focusing on bronze and masonry elements as part of the Conservancy’s program of cyclical conservation and maintenance. Staff will strip the sculpture’s existing lacquer, condition the bronze, ameliorate the weathered patina and restore a sustainable hot wax coating in order to protect the bronze from the elements and preserve the fountain for generations to come. The statue, built in 1873, is slated to be back in view with its waters flowing by the end of May. Check out the Central Park Conservancy’s announcement for more information about the conservation of the Angel of Waters fountain.
