Tuesday’s job fair, “Putting New Yorkers Back to Work,” brought an incredibly large crowd of New York job seekers to the New York Society of Ethical Culture (64th at Central Park West), according to CBS New York. Nearly 4,000 hopefuls formed a line that stretched for blocks (despite the rainy weather) for a chance to meet recruiters from Fortune 500 companies face-to-face. The free event was arranged by the NYSEC as a community service, which in turn drew companies that normally hire online and through search firms. Companies like American Express, IBM, Colgate Palmolive, and Columbia University were represented, and in addition to a traditional position recruiting area, there were resume writing and interview workshops, a presentation on the current forecast for employment, and a separate space for select companies who are seeking to fill more senior positions. Many persistent and eager job seekers attended the event, traveling from near and far to get to the fair and networking with others while waiting in the huge line. Their persistence may actually pay off; recruiters say the job market is opening up, and a recent survey by Manpower of nearly 20,000 employers here in New York City found a six percent increase in hiring, the most encouraging statistics in about two years.
